Why she left the ten minute visit.
For eleven years, Dr. Calloway worked in one of Austin's busiest primary care groups. On a normal day she saw 25 to 28 patients. Most visits lasted twelve minutes. Charting and insurance paperwork filled her evenings.
"I was trained to listen, to examine carefully and to catch the small thing before it becomes a big thing," she says. "The system didn't leave room for that. My patients deserved better, and honestly, so did I."
She noticed the same pattern again and again. A patient would mention something on the way out the door, the thing they had really come about, and there was no time left to explore it. Results came back and nobody had time to explain them. Specialists sent letters that never got read.
In 2023 she opened Merivane with one rule: never take on more members than she can genuinely know. The panel is capped at 300. When it is full, new members join a short waitlist.
"Medicine works best as a relationship. That needs time, and time is exactly what membership protects."
